The Baxter Seagulls Take Flight Again
Last winter, after a six-year hiatus, the Baxter Seagulls basketball team returned to the court, bringing new energy to Maine’s deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Representing the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, their comeback was made possible in part by the Percival P. Baxter Foundation for Maine’s Deaf & Hard of Hearing Children (PPBF), whose support provided the team with brand-new uniforms.
For many of the nine players, basketball was a new experience — but it quickly became more than a sport. The Seagulls found a place to connect in American Sign Language, build friendships, and share pride in their identity. Their games became community events, drawing families, alumni, and fans who cheered in both voices and waving hands.
As the Seagulls look ahead, the coming season promises to be just as exciting — filled with teamwork, growth, and the strong spirit of Maine’s deaf community.
